High Assay Borneol Manufacture from China for Personal care, Cosmetic

Brief introduction:

Borneol is also known as Borneo camphor.  Borneol has two isomers, namely L-borneol (levorotatory borneol) and D-borneol (dextrorotatory borneol). Natural borneol is mainly dextrorotatory borneol. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is also called “Mei Pian” when it has a specific high purity and appearance.
Borneol  is divided into natural borneol and synthetic borneol.
Natural borneol is extracted from plants. It has a high content of borneol and high purity. The main component of natural borneol is dextral borneol, with a borneol content of at least 96%. Synthetic borneol is mainly synthesized by chemical methods using camphor and turpentine as the main raw materials. The borneol content is only about 55%.

Application:

Borneol Used In Medicine:
  • Borneol is an important ingredient in many traditional Chinese medicines such as Compound Danshen Dropping Pills, Suhexiang Pills, Angong Niuhuang Pills, Liushen Pills, Tankejing, and Shuangliao Houfeng Powder. Borneol is used for its effects of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, calming and soothing the mind, opening orifices and refreshing the mind, improving metabolism, reducing fever and relieving pain. Borneol can also be used in modern clinical medicine for preventing and treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, enhancing the absorption of anticancer drugs by cancer cells, protecting nerves and brain tissues, and promoting blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability.
  • In otorhinolaryngology, Borneol has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and can be used to treat certain diseases.
  • Borneol can be used in the treatment of aesthetic diseases.
Borneol Used in Flavors and Fragrances:
  • High assay borneol is used to add unique scents and flavors to perfumes, cosmetics, and food flavorings.  Borneol adds a unique fragrance: Borneol provides a distinct and refreshing scent that can enhance the sensory experience of cosmetic and personal care products. Borneol can be used in perfumes, body sprays, and lotions to create a pleasant and invigorating aroma.
Borneol Used in Daily Chemicals:
  • Borneol can be added to various daily chemical products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and skincare products for its refreshing and antibacterial properties. Borneol can help reduce skin inflammation, making it useful for those with sensitive or irritated skin. For example, Borneol may be included in products for people with rosacea or eczema to soothe and calm the skin.
  • Borneol has antimicrobial properties that can help fight off bacteria and fungi on the skin, reducing the risk of breakouts and infections. This makes borneol a valuable ingredient in acne treatments and products designed to maintain skin hygiene.

Storage Notes: Sealed stored in cold, dry, good ventilated place, avoid high temperature and moist.

The difference between natural Borneol and Synthsized Borneol?

Source and Composition:
Natural borneol is extracted from plants. It has a high content of borneol and high purity. The main component is often dextral borneol, with a borneol content of at least 96%. For example, natural borneol with a borneol content of over 99% and in the shape of plum blossoms (known as Mei Pian) is considered the top grade.
Synthetic borneol is mainly synthesized by chemical methods using camphor and turpentine as the main raw materials. It contains not only borneol (about 55% content) but also a large amount of isoborneol.
Effectiveness:
Natural borneol has better medicinal effects. It has multiple functions such as assisting absorption, synergistic enhancement, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, calming and soothing the mind, opening orifices and refreshing the mind, improving metabolism, reducing fever and relieving pain. It is widely used in many famous traditional Chinese patent medicines and has applications in modern clinical medicine for preventing and treating various diseases and promoting health.
Synthetic borneol has relatively poor medicinal effects due to its lower borneol content and the presence of isoborneol.
Safety:
Natural borneol is generally considered safer as it contains fewer potentially harmful substances.
Synthetic borneol contains isoborneol, which is a toxic component and can have strong side effects on the human body. It is also prone to causing allergic reactions.

Price: the price has a very big difference between natural Borneol and Synthsized Borneol

How to tell the natural and synthesized Borneol?

I. Observe the source and price
  1. Source channels:
    • Natural borneol is usually extracted from specific plants such as Dryobalanops aromatica or Blumea balsamifera. Natural borneol indicates that its source is these specific plants or comes from a reliable traditional Chinese medicine producing area, it is likely to be natural borneol.
    • Synthetic borneol is mainly synthesized by chemical methods using camphor and turpentine as the main raw materials. If the production process of the product involves chemical synthesis techniques or its raw materials clearly mention camphor, turpentine, etc., it is probably synthetic borneol.
  2. Price differences:
    • Natural borneol has a relatively high price, generally ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 yuan per kilogram. If the price is significantly higher than the price range of synthetic borneol, it is more likely to be natural borneol.
    • Synthetic borneol has a relatively low price, usually less than one-tenth of the price of natural borneol. If you encounter a borneol product with an extremely low price, it is most likely synthetic borneol.
II. Chemical analysis
  1. Component detection:
    • The main component of natural borneol, borneol, has a content of at least 96%. Among them, plum slices with a borneol content of over 99% and in the shape of plum blossoms are the top grade of natural borneol. Professional chemical analysis methods such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) can be used to detect the content and purity of borneol in the product to determine whether it is natural borneol.
    • Synthetic borneol has only about 55% borneol content and also contains a large amount of isoborneol in addition to borneol. Isoborneol is a toxic component. Detecting the presence of isoborneol can also help distinguish synthetic borneol.
  2. Physical property detection:
    • Melting point and boiling point: Natural and synthetic borneol may have some differences in  melting point and boiling point can be measured to assist in judgment. The melting point and boiling point of natural borneol may be relatively stable and specific, while due to the complexity of the composition, the physical properties of synthetic borneol may have a certain fluctuation range.
    • Optical rotation: Natural dextral borneol has specific optical rotation. An optical rotation instrument can be used to detect the optical rotation of borneol to determine whether it is natural dextral borneol.
III. Sensory identification

  Odor:

    • Natural borneol has a unique and delicate fragrance. The odor is relatively pure and soft. It gives people a fresh and comfortable feeling when smelled.
    • Synthetic borneol may have a relatively pungent odor or a special smell of chemical synthesis substances.
